Market Description

Size
The Belgian fashion sector turnover in 2013 was 6,8 billion
euros (+3% in comparision with 2012) and represents 5,2%
of the household budget in 2013.
Regarding January - February 2016, the turnover increased
by 1,1% in comparison with the same period in 2015.
The main fashion retailers are the specialized chains and
large department stores (44%) but the two next biggest ways
of selling clothes are the independent stores (18.9%) and
online sales (9.9%). (see graph to the right).
According to Comeos.be, there are 12.672 points of sale for the clothing in 2014 in Belgium.
Growth
As a result of the economic recovery, spending in clothes and shoes in 2014 are increasing of 3,5% in comparison with 2013. The growth from 2013 to 2014 for clothes is the third biggest growth after communication and education.
In fact, according to Daniel Wertel, President of the French Federation of Ready-Made Clothing, the upcoming trends are the preservation of the hand-made French clothes, the development of mini collection or “capsules” (clothes in limited edition) and above all fostering the emergence of new clothes designers.
